Assynt & Coigach

Assynt & Coigach is an area of outstanding character, dominated by isolated peaks and covered in a myriad of lochs and lochans (lakes and small lakes). Its landscape character is a consequence of the ancient geology which is formed by the gneiss, the world’s oldest rock and a very rugged platform for the mountains formed of Torridonian sandstones.  These mountains, although much younger than the gneiss, are still between 800 and 1,000 million years old. The same geology as the Torridon area to the south. Here, though the mountains are much eroded in stature and left standing as spectacular, isolated monoliths.
