The Island of Eigg lies South East of Rum, closer to the mainland, some 13 miles by ferry from Mallaig. It has distinctive geology and is recognised from afar by its famous ‘Sgurr’ which forms a dramatic termination to the pitchstone ridge that forms a ‘backbone’ to the island. Another feature is the Jurassic sedimentary rock which is exposed along the shore line on the north part of the island, and unusual large round boulders (or concretions) of cemented sandstone.
