WEST HIGHLAND RAILWAY IMAGES

This Page is under construction and awaiting upload of images and text.

27th October 2012, An Scottish Railway Preservation Society (SRPS) Charter returning from Fort William, double headed with two BR 5MT ‘Black Fives’, 44871 & 45407, tackle the long 1in 50 climb to the County March summit from the great  ‘Horse Shoe Bend’ at Auch, 5km south of Bridge of Orchy

This Section of the Website is devoted to a selection of images taken on the West Highland Railway Lines. This Railway connects the City of Glasgow, in Scotland’s Central Belt, with the West Highlands of Scotland and the significant commercial and business towns of Oban and Fort William. In addition it continues from Fort William, west to the small but important fishing port and ferry terminal of Mallaig.

The lines pass through some of the most spectacular and varied scenery in Britain. However this website is limited to photography and visitors are highly recommended to visit the ‘Friends of the West Highland Line’ website for a full description of the West Highland Lines and many more images, including recent updates can be viewed. https://westhighlandline.org.uk/

You are also recommended to visit the  ScotRail for travel information, timetables and booking journeys.https://www.scotrail.co.uk/inspiration-hub/great-scenic-rail-journeys/west-highland-line-glasgow-oban-and-fort-williammallaig

NOTE: The images amount to a selection of pictures of services on the line, taken by the author and are copyright of the author. They are included primarily to show the trains and locomotives in the West Highland scenery, rather than any form of comprehensive railway archive which would be of interest to rail ‘enthusiasts’.

NOT ACTIVE YET

The first section  shows images of STEAM LOCOMOTIVE hauled trains, captured on the West Highland Lines running between Glasgow Queen Street Station to Oban and Fort William. Note that the lines form a common route as far as Crianlarich, where the lines split, one line takes travellers west to Oban and the other North to Fort William.

The second section covers STEAM HAULED traffic on the line between Fort William and Mallaig. The route of the famous ‘Jacobite’ trains and the equally famous Glenfinnan Viaduct (sometimes erroneously called the ‘Harry Potter Bridge’.

Subsequent sections will include NORMAL (DIESEL & DMU) service, passenger, freight and charter traffic.
